Starting Line 12″s destroyed by fire

Photograph: Luke Macgregor/Reuters

We are gutted to announce that the vast majority of our Starting Line 12″s released just last week on DUMMY Records were destroyed by a fire at the Sony DADC / PIAS Warehouse in Enfield, London. The 3-storey 20,000 square-metre building was burned to the ground on 8th August during riots following the shooting of Mark Duggan by armed police. Clearly, there is more at stake than home entertainment, and we feel it would be selfish to be angry about our records being lost along with so many others. PIAS is the UK’s largest independent home entertainment distributor for record labels such as Domino, Warp, 4AD, Thrill Jockey and many other small labels, as well as film distributors such as BFI and Artificial Eye. To get an idea of the scale of what’s been destroyed, the BFI  alone has lost in excess of 120,000 units.

As a tiny drop in the ocean, we’re not so harshly affected as many, but it seems pretty much agreed that this is going to have a large knock-on effect in the independent community, with the smaller labels feeling it worst. We’re glad that nobody was hurt, and our best wishes go to everyone who is going to feel the extra pinch in these already uncertain times.

However, we feel that we have no right to lay all of the blame upon society’s poorest. Instead of condemning their actions, we would rather think about the climate which has led to such events and ways to stop this from furthering a right-wing agenda.

Keep yr brains about you! Peace!

If you’re after the Starting Line 12″, DUMMY might have a few copies left, Norman Records have a box,  and we have a handful available at shows until they’re all gone too. Digital copies of the Starting Line 12″ can be purchased from shop.dummymag.com or stream it here.

In the meantime, we’re looking forward to escapism through seeing loads of good music, partying and playing at Beacons Festival this weekend. We play second to last on Sunday 14th August at 9:30pm on the Heslaker Stage and you’ll hear some new songs!

Stay positive!

If all that HD depth is too much for you, here’s the audio on Soundcloud:

And whilst we’re at it, here’s a recent RUNNERS remix of a Juffage track, which you can only get as a download if you buy the 12″ version of his album Semi-Circle, released 6th June 2011 on Function Records.

DUMMY announce new RUNNERS 12″ single – listen now!

We are happy to say that the first RUNNERS vinyl is nearly upon us, released on 18th July 2011 by DUMMY. Starting Line was recorded by Grant Henderson at Loom Studios and mixed by Steven Whitfield. On the B side is an instrumental version of Starting Line and another track, Pulsar Quasar, which Jeff T Smith recorded at Loom Studios. Michael Ward undertook mastering duties. We are thankful to them all. Keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of weeks for the video, made by Eoin Shea in full 1080p super high definition. This is what DUMMY have to say about it:

The next release on Dummy will be a 12” by the fab Leeds band RUNNERS. Coming from the DIY / noise scene around the north west, they’ve done time in bands like CHOPS, Tigers! and The Chinchilla Collective, their sound is anxious, fun and acidic, and they are our boys. You can nip over to the Dummy shop to grab the FLACs, and we’ll be releasing a 12” by them in mid-July, which you can stream on Soundcloud. This is very exciting.

STARTING LINE / NEON LIGHTS / 2010 SHOWS / SPACE PORSCHE LIVE VIDEO

RUNNERS - Starting Line
Recorded by Ross Halden at
Ghost Town Studios
Mastered by Michael Ward, 2010

We are currently making perspex boxes to house our absolutely beautiful neon lights, crafted by the brilliant and lovely Richard Wheater and Julia Bickerstaff at Neon Workshops – we really can’t thank them enough! We sent Eoin Shea to Wakefield to make a film of the lights being made, so we’ll make a soundtrack for the video and put it up here when it’s ready. There are some sweet photographs of the neon lights being made on the Images page of this blog, and we launch the lights at NIGHT LIGHT LEEDS 2010 on Friday 8th October when we play with Blank Dogs and Spectrals with live visuals by Limn Art Collective at Nation of Shopkeepers.

XFM and the BBC have been playing our first two recorded tracks, Stay Frosty and Starting Line on the radio over the last few weeks, and some nice words have been scribbled about us on blogs such as Pinglewood, who also wrote about us on Pitchfork‘s new collaborative blog, Altered Zones. Closer to home, The Leeds Guide wrote about us in their best new bands feature, and we had a whale of a time taking the stage at 1am for Dave Lynch‘s 20th birthday celebration of Twin Peaks at Temple Works.
